George Petzinger ISRAEL, 89, of Eldon, died Sunday, May 1, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines (note: in Polk Co., IA).

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ottumwa Baptist Temple in Ottumwa (in Wapello Co., IA).

Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, with family present from 5-7 p.m. at Kremer Funeral Home in Eldon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to Ottumwa Baptist Temple or Ashland Cemetery. An online guestbook can be signed at www.kremerfh.com.

Mr. ISRAEL was born March 27, 1927, in Wapello County, the only child of Charlie and Iva PETZINGER ISRAEL. He married Madelyn HENDERSON Nov. 21, 1950, at Eldon Baptist Church in Eldon. She died Oct. 13, 1995.

Mr. ISRAEL grew up on the family farm. He attended Ashland Country School, and graduated from Eldon High School in 1945.

He began his own farming operation at the age of 16, when his uncle helped him rent land.

In January of 1951, Mr. ISRAEL enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Fort McClellan, Alabama. His wife traveled with him and they spent a few years in Anniston, Alabama, while he was in the Army Chemical Corps. After his honorable discharge, they returned home to Eldon and the family farm, and he began to expand his farming operation.

Mr. ISRAEL began working at Underwriters Insurance as an adjuster. After two years, he purchased Finney Insurance Agency. He eventually added Israel Reality (sic) to the name.

Mr. ISRAEL was an active member of Ottumwa Baptist Temple, a Mason, and country trustee. He served on numerous boards in varying capacities, such as the election board, county zoning board and Wapello County Fair Board.

Survivors include: two sons, Charles ISRAEL and wife Carolyn of Des Moines and David ISRAEL and wife Pam of Davenport; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
