Joseph E. 'Joe' KURKA

Joseph E. "Joe" KURKA, 81, of Fairfield, died at his home in the care of his wife Wednesday, April 20, 2016.

Cremation has been accorded. A private family interment will be at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.

A memorial has been established to: Boy Scout Troop 216 and can be mailed to PO Box 681, North Liberty 52317. Online condolences can be made at www.raymondfuneralhomes.com.

Arrangements are in the care of Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Mr. KURKA was born May 15, 1934, in Fairfield, the son of Edward F. and Beatrice SCHRACK KURKA. He married Sharon K. STOOKSBERRY Sept. 10, 1966, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ottumwa.

A lifelong resident of Fairfield, Mr. KURKA graduated from Fairfield High School in 1952 and from Coyne Institute in Chicago in 1954.

He worked for 40 years in TV sales and services before his retirement in 1997.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a charter member of the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. KURKA loved spending time traveling in his motorhome and spent several winters traveling throughout the south with his wife. He loved gardening, bird-watching and spending time with his children.

Survivors include: his wife Sharon KURKA; two sons, Kevin D. KURKA and wife Jennifer of North Liberty and Jason Joe KURKA of Corvallis, Oregon; and two brothers, James KURKA and Richard KURKA, both of Fairfield.

Deceased family members include: his parents; one sister, Eloise "Sis" JOHNSTON; and one brother, Robert KURKA.
