Ferdinandus "Nando" Jacobus Aloysius SCHELLEN, 81, died Monday, March 28, 2016, in Phoenix, Arizona, after a brief illness.
A musical celebration of his life will be at 3 p.m. April 17 at Ardrey Memorial Auditorium on the Northern Arizona University campus in Flagstaff, Arizona, with a reception to follow.
An ongoing award has been established in his name with the Arizona District of the Metropolitan Opera National Council awards. Mr. SCHELLEN was born Oct. 11, 1934, in The Hague, The Netherlands. He married Deborah RAYMOND of Fairfield.
He attended the Jesuit school De Breul in The Netherlands.
He was managing director and associate general director of The Netherlands Opera from 1969-1986. He was directing assistant at the Wagner Bayreuth Festival in Germany and he began directing his own opera productions in 1982. He also was interim general director of the Sweelinck Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam, as well as president of The Netherlands Wind Ensemble for 23 years. From 1992-1996, he was general/artistic director of Indianapolis Opera.
During his career, he directed more than 70 operas, musicals, operettas, and opera scenes in Europe, Canada, and The United States.
His teaching career began as opera director with the international summer school "Oberlin at Casalmaggiore" in Northern Italy and continued in 2000 with his appointment as director of opera theater at Northern Arizona University, a position he held until his retirement as associate professor emeritus of music in 2015 at the age of 80.
He and his wife co-founded the Italian summer opera program "Flagstaff in Fidenza." He was artistic director of the program for five summers, providing opera training and performing opportunities for aspiring young opera singers.
He has visited Fairfield and participated in programs at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.
Survivors include: his wife, Deborah RAYMOND; one sister, Marijke; one brother, John; three daughters, Eugenie, Saskia, and Katia; one son, Ivo, and four grandchildren.
