James Weaver, 88, of Birmingham, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, from injuries resulting from a tractor accident.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham, with the Rev. Phil Campbell officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham.

Family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home in Birmingham.

A memorial has been established for the restoration of the log cabin in Birmingham City Park.

Mr. Weaver was born May 2, 1916, in Hoxie, Kan., the son of Charles Elmer and Eva Stepp Weaver. He married Hazel Fae Pickerel July 9, 1940, in Muscatine. She died Sept. 1, 2002.

He was a lifelong resident of the Fairfield, Perlee, Stockport and Birmingham communities. He was employed as a trucker hauling coal and as a mechanic for Fairfield International and Hohl & Hohl Implement in Keosauqua. Mr. Weaver owned and operated Birmingham Truck and Tractor service for nearly 50 years. He also drove a school bus for many years.

A veteran of the United States Army and World War II, he served in the Philippines in the Pacific theater of operations. Mr. Weaver was a 60-year member of the American Legion, and had been a member of Birmingham Lions Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Rosalyn Hendricks and husband Ben of Bonaparte and Diana Weaver of Memphis, Mo.; two sons, Bill Weaver and wife Charlotte and Jerry Weaver and wife Mary, all of Birmingham; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Leonard Polk Weaver of Birmingham.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Gertrude Giberson, Mary Belle Simpkins and Virgie Filson; and three brothers, Rex Weaver, Charles Weaver and Harold Weaver.
