Carl G. Mitchell, 94, of Keokuk and formerly of Packwood, died at 1 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Lexington Square Care Center in Keokuk.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Harlan Van Voorst officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Packwood Cemetery in Packwood.

Calling hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the funeral Wednesday at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established to the Packwood Fire Department.

Mr. Mitchell was born April 10, 1910, in Abingdon, the son of Arthur G. and Elizabeth Ann Minnick Mitchell.

He married Mary Jo Pierce Aug. 7, 1945, in Oklahoma. She died Jan. 8, 1969. He later married Kate DeBusk, who died in 1998.

He lived in Abingdon, Martinsburg and Hedrick communities before moving to Packwood in 1922. After graduating from Packwood High School, he attended Iowa Success Business College in Ottumwa.

He served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 in the European theater of operations, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was employed as a bookkeeper by Dickey Transport in Packwood and owned and operated a grocery store in Packwood. He drove a school bus for Packwood and Pekin schools for more than 30 years.

A member of Packwood Methodist Church and, later, Prairie View United Methodist Church, Mr. Mitchell was active in church and school activities in the Packwood community.

Mr. Mitchell lived in Abingdon, Va., prior to moving to Keokuk in 1998.

Survivors include one daughter, Bettie Downey of Oskaloosa; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Brown of Keokuk; and one brother, Roy Mitchell of Packwood.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Willis Mitchell.
