Robert Douglas SMITH, 66, of Des Moines and formerly of Batavia, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016. at his home.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Kremer Funeral Chapel in Batavia. Burial will follow in the Batavia Cemetery.
Visitation, with family present, will be held one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to the family to be used for local charities. Friends can sign the online guestbook at www.kremerfh.com.
Mr. SMITH was born April 22, 1949, the son of Leo and Dorothy FRESCOLN SMITH. He married Nancy ELLER in 1973, and they later divorced.
His early years were spent helping on the family farm near Batavia. He attended school locally before going to Parsons College in Fairfield. Upon leaving college, he returned to help on the farm.
He enlisted in the Army National Guard in the sumer of 1970 and served for many years. He continued to work on the family farm. The farm remained his home until a few years ago when it was sold and he moved to Des Moines.
In his free time, he enjoyed computer games, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, watching NHRA races and going on road trips to see his family.
Survivors include: his children, Tom SMITH and wife Becky of Ankeny, and Julie HALBUR and husband Denny of Coon Rapids; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; and one sister, Patti JONES.
