Carold Glee HAYS, age 78, of Long beach, California, died January 6th at Chandler Convalescent Hospital in Glendale, California, where she had been a resident for over a year.
Carole Glee ROBERTS was born to Earl and Frances BUTCHER ROBERTS on March 14, 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was raised in Fairfield, Iowa, attending Fairfield High School, Parsons College and the University of Iowa.
She married Jerry HAYS of Des Moines, Iowa in 1960. They divorced in 1968.
Glee, as she was known to her family, was a talented artist, pianist, and teacher. At age 18 she accompanied the Parsons College symphony performing Mozart's piano concerto 23. She taught elementary students in the Westminster and Long Beach school districts, organizing several school musicals and plays. Her classroom was often the subject of tours, for its innovative and stimulating teaching environment.
She was an active member of Geneva Presbyterian Church in Long Beach as church organist and accompanist for the choir. In the 1980's (sic) she worked tirelessly for the environment and peace, attending seminars on peace education and writing plays for the Covenant Players of Reseda presenting "Sanctuary Drama" and performance art for area churches.
After retirement she hoped to continue with her music and community work, but developed blindness from diabetes. She studied at the Braille Institute and was able to live independently for several years.
Glee will be remembered by all for her humor and wit, her resilience and her idealism. She is survived by her son Tim HAYS of Los Angeles, sisters Vernanne BRYAN of Los Angeles and Karla ALFANO of Queens, New York: nieces and nephews Michael BRYAN of Culver City, Emily ALFANO of Great Barrington, MA, Peter ALFANO III of Washington, D.C. and Darcy BRYAN of Los Angeles. A memorial service was held March 12th in Long Beach, CA. where her ashes were scattered off the coast.
Donations in her memory can be made to Gould Farm, 100 Gould Road, Monterey, MA 01245 or online www.gouldfarm.org
