Max H. BATES

Max H. BATES, 92, formerly of South Bend, Indiana, and Fairfield, died at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at Signature Health Care in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The funeral was Feb. 18 at First Presbyterian Church in South Bend, with Adelia Kelso officiating. Burial and a graveside service followed in Highland Cemetery in South Bend.

Contributions in memory of Mr. BATES can be made to First Presbyterian Church, 333 W. Colfax Avenue, South Bend IN 46601, or to Heartland Hospice, 1315 Directors Row Suite 210, Fort Wayne, IN 46808.

Palmer Funeral Home-River Park in South Bend assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. BATES was born March 11, 1923, in Fairfield, the son of Harley W. BATES and Lila JACOBS BATES CASTILE. He married Virginia "Ginny" HITCHCOCK Aug. 4, 1946, in Millington, Tennessee. She died Jan. 10, 2008.

Mr. BATES was a member of First Presbyterian Church in South Bend since 1950, where he ushered for 55 years and also served as a deacon.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy as a radar man in the Pacific. Following the war, he returned to Cornell University and was commissioned ensign. He graduated from Parsons College.

Mr. BATES worked at Bendix Corporation for 37 years as engineer in Energy Controls Division.

He served as past president of Former Engineers of St. Joseph Valley.

He was an avid bowler and an avid golfer, accomplishing two hole in ones (sic) at Erskine Golf Course in South Bend and Gull Lake in Augusta, Michigan.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Judie and John PASQUALE of Fort Wayne; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Anita BATES of Fort Wayne; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

In addition to his wife, he was preceeded (sic) in death by: his brother, Orland BATES.
