David 'Rex' MOORE

David "Rex" MOORE, 89, of Eldon, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa.

As were his wishes, the body has been cremated, with burial to be held at a later date. A time of remembrance for family and friends will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday in the Eldon Christian Church basement.

Mr. MOORE was born March 18, 1926, in rural Van Buren County, the son of Frank and Minerva WINTERS MOORE. He married Irene LANMAN Oct. 9, 1948, in Lancaster, Missouri.

He attended school during his younger years, but left early to enter the workforce and help at home.

Mr. MOORE joined the Army and served during World War II.

After their marriage, he and his wife briefly rented a small apartment in Ottumwa, then moved to Eldon.

Mr. MOORE worked for 30 years at John Morrell in Ottumwa until it closed in 1973. He then began working at Rockwell International in Fairfield as a machinist until his retirement in 1988. Even while working second shift at these jobs, he would wake up early to shingle, paint or do other tasks. After retirement, he continued using his skills as a carpenter and handyman.

Mr. and Mrs. MOORE were active members of Eldon Baptist Church for many years. He was responsible for many of the projects and upkeep that was needed at the church.

He enjoyed his quiet time in the timber cutting firewood to heat his home. He continued to do so until the age of 85 when he and his wife moved to Douds. He enjoyed nature and the outdoors, fishing and working in his garden.

Survivors include: his wife, Irene MOORE of Douds; two sons, Robert MOORE and spouse Sherri of Eldon and Ron and spouse Gary WILLIS of Iowa City; one daughter-in-law, Taffa MOORE of Selma; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; two children, Rhonda and Richard MOORE; one grandson; five brothers, Harold, Theodore, Edward, George and Charles MOORE; and two sisters, Margaret POOL and Louise ESSARY.
