Russell W. GORDY, 91, of rural Mount Sterling, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua.

Russell GORDY, 91, of Mount Sterling died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at his home.

The funeral will 10:30 a.m. Thursday (sic) at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Bill Shewmaker officiating. Burial will be in Harness Cemetery in rural Mount Sterling (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with family present 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials to Harness Cemetery can be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at Route 2, Box 136A, Memphis, MO 63555.

Mr. GORDY was born Nov. 8, 1924, the son of Jake and Ida GORDY RUSSELL. He married Florence "Flo" AYLOR in August 1945.

Mr. GORDY was a lifelong farmer and farmed until last year.

For several years in the 1970s, Mr. GORDY was in a partnership buying and selling tractors.

He loved attending auctions and sales, and he never knew a stranger. In the last several years, he could be found first thing in the morning drinking coffee with friends at Brewer's garage.

Mr. GORDY was around horses all his life, first as a child using them to farm with and later to ride. He always had a horse on the farm, and when he got older and could no longer ride, he purchased a buggy horse. He sometimes rode into town with the horse and buggy or the horse and sleigh in the winter.

Mr. GORDY enjoyed sharing his passions with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whether it was raising ducks or raising an orphaned raccoon.

He loved to travel. As a young man, he traveled around the country before settling in the Mount Sterling area. He traveled to many places: Texas, Hawaii, Mexico, Virgin Islands, and the Western United States.

Survivors include: son-in-law, Freddie HENDERSON of Memphis, Missouri; one granddaughter; one grandson, one great-granddaughter; a special friend, Irene Hammond of Keosauqua; one stepgreat-granddaughter; and two stepgreat-great granddaughters; two stepgreat-great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife; one daughter, Carla HENDERSON; five sisters, Velva, Cleta, Inez, Neva and an infant.
