Danny HUGHES

Danny Lee HUGHES, 67, of Cantril, died at 5:05 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial, with military honors by Russell-Strait Post No. 493 and Iowa National Guard Honor Squad, will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).

Visitation will open at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with family present 5-7 p.m.

Gifts to a memorial to be designated by the family can be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at PO Box 13, Cantril 52542.

Mr. HUGHES was born Feb. 18, 1949, in Keosauqua, the son of Rupert R. and Dora Marie WHITCANACK HUGHES. He married Victoria NELSON March 22, 1975, at Cantril Christian Church. She died Dec. 29, 2011.

Mr. HUGHES grew up in Van Buren County. He graduated from Van Buren High School in 1967 and attended Iowa Tech School, now known as Indian Hills Community College, in Ottumwa to study graphic arts.

He served in the U.S. Army. He was in Vietnam from 1967 until he returned home in August 1969. He was awarded five Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, the Flying Air Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and others.

Mr. HUGHES had been employed at Braceland Brothers, which was a government printing office in Steubenville, Ohio, Prairie Grain in Stockport, Reiff Feed & Grain and Acco-Babcock, both in Fairfield, and Barker Ltd. in Keosauqua.

He spent his adult years in Stockport, Bentonsport and Cantril.

He was a member of Russell-Strait Post No. 483, American Legion in Milton.

Mr. HUGHES enjoyed spending time with his son, granddaughter and extended family, as well as playing cards at the Cantril Fire Station. He was a contributor to the Cantril community. He had the honor of giving Memorial Day speeches at several high schools around the community.

Survivors include: one son, Travis E. HUGHES of Cantril; one granddaughter; three brothers, Allen HUGHES of Keosauqua, Roger HUGHES of Cantril and Rodney HUGHES of Mayfield, Pennsylvania; six sisters, Maxine SMITH and Joann BISHOP, both of Cantril, Evelyn HUFFMAN of Utica, Illinois, Beverly LATIMER of Carbondale, Pennsylvania, Phyllis BICKERSTAFF of Hopedale, Ohio, and Sandy GILLESPIE of Arlington, Texas.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: his parents; and two brothers, Jackie and Howard HUGHES.
