Jessie Mildred Swailes Byers, 93, resident of Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant and formerly of Fairfield, died at 11:37 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at Arbor Court.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Grant Cemetery near Rome, Iowa, with the Rev. Dave Peterson officiating. The body has been cremated.

No visitation is planned.

Behner Funeral Home and Crematory in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Byers was born March 20, 1911, in Rome, the daughter of Robert W. and Ida Messer Swailes. She married Ora Lee Byers Nov. 18, 1938, in Mount Pleasant. He died Sept. 1, 1989.

She lived most of her life in the Fairfield area before moving to Mount Pleasant. She was employed as a nurses aide by Jefferson County Hospital and by Mental Health Institute in Mount Pleasant.

Survivors include one foster daughter, Doris Schrum of Fairfield; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Hoover and Velma Kinney; and four brothers, George, Simon, Robert and Howard Swailes.
