Harvey BYRIEL

Harvey BYRIEL, 85, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2016, at Israel Family Hospice House surrounded by his family.

A celebration of Harvey's life will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, January 8, 2016, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday at Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Harvey James BYRIEL was born August 6, 1930, in Ross, Iowa to Peter and Anna (SORENSON) BYRIEL. He grew up in both Ross and Audubon, Iowa where he received his education and began to learn the carpentry trade. On August 11, 1951, Harvey was united in marriage to Dolores Jeanette PLOUGHMAN at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Shortly after, in the fall of 1951, Harvey enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country during the Korean War (sic - Korean Conflict).

Following his military service of two years, the couple made their permanent home in Ames and were blessed with seven children; Jeani, Connie, Shari, Peggy, Patti, Jim, and Julie. Harvey continued his lifelong career as a carpenter working with Hans Aagaard, Mancel Lee, Henry Brahms, and the Iowa State University Physical Plant. In 1977, Harvey founded Byriel Construction. He built and remodeled many homes in the Ames area. In 1985 Harvey helped start Kitchen, Bath & Home with daughter Jeani. Harvey provided his knowledge and craftsmanship to this design/build firm. His legacy continues in Byriel Construction now run by his son Jim. Harvey retired in 1995. Throughout his life, he upheld his family values and maintained a strong work ethic. He passed these values on to all of his children.

After his retirement, Harvey and Dolores began to spend winters in Florida at Dora Canal. Harvey continued his craftsmanship of carpentry as he built cabinets, furniture, and took on many projects for all his children and friends. Above all, Harvey was a family man and a loyal friend. He loved spending time with Dolores, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and many many friends who all held a special place in his heart.

Harvey will be deeply missed by his wife of 64 years, Dolores; children and grandchildren, Jeani (Mike) LEE with children Jackie and Jen, Connie (Phil) MILLER with children Andy, Dan, Jane, and Joe, Shari (John) PAULE with children Jessica and Austin, Peggy (Doug) WIERSON with children Hank and Ted, Patti BYRIEL, Jim (Carol) BYRIEL with children Brett and Kelli, and Julie (Zach) ALLEN with children Josiah, Acacia, Isaac, and Kiah; 11 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Alice KAUFFMAN, Glenn BYRIEL and Russell (Wynn) BYRIEL.
