Wanda M. Kessel Schimmelpfennig, 72, of 1103 S. Main St. in Fairfield, died at 9:24 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Stephen Page officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield. Behner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, followed by Prayers for a Christian Wake at 6 p.m. Family visitation will follow until 8:30 p.m. at the church.

A memorial fund has been established.

Mrs. Schimmelpfennig was born Feb. 19, 1932, in Fairfield, the daughter of Vern and Grace Messer Samuelson. She married George J. Kessel Oct. 7, 1950; he died Oct. 15, 1994. She later married Gerald Schimmelpfennig Feb. 21, 2004.

She was a lifelong resident of Fairfield. After graduating from Fairfield High School in 1950, she was employed by J.C. Penney Co. for 17 years.

Mrs. Schimmelpfennig helped with Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary and was secretary for Fairfield Senior Citizen Center. She also belonged to Questers.

She was a member and communion server of St. Mary Catholic Church.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, swimming, dancing, walking, playing cards and antiquing.

Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Jane Adam and husband Bill of Richland, Karen Clingan and husband Chris of Fairfield, Susan White and husband Martin of OFallon, Mo., and Amy Hudson and husband Scott of Clive; five sons, Patrick Kessel and wife Suzan of Fairfield, Michael Kessel and wife Chris of Bettendorf, Steven Kessel and wife Lori of Fairfield, Bob Kessel and wife Carol Lee of Fairfield and Bill Kessel and wife Christin of Kalona; two stepdaughters, Luann Schimmelpfennig of Batavia and Diana Graham of Neola; 21 grandchildren, Stacy Berg, Alex and Makenzie Kessel, Jessica and Sean Kessel, Brandi, Brent, Troy Adam, Carrie, Ryan and Chrissy Clingan, Andrew and Makayla Kessel, Allison, Curtis, Molly White, Jacob, Joshua and Jonathan Kessel, Alex, Lindsey and Jennifer Hudson and R.J. and Megan Bontrager; four stepgrandchildren; two great-granddaughters, Emilie and Isabel Bert; two brothers Merlin Sammy Samuelson of Sun City, Fla., and Don Samuelson of Fairfield; and one sister, Marjorie Breuer of Burlington.

In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and two grandchildren.
