Irvan D. Hesseltine, 89, of Brighton died at 12:10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Jefferson County Hospital following a long illness.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church of God in Brighton, with the Rev. Rick Zickefoose officiating. Burial will be in Eicher Cemetery near Wayland.

Open visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton, with family present from 6-7:30 p.m.

Memorials have been established to Brighton Volunteer First Responders and the First Church of God building fund.

Mr. Hesseltine was born Dec. 27, 1914, near Washington, Iowa, the son of Albert and Emma Schantz Hesseltine. He married Frieda Woodyard March 16, 1940, in Burlington.

He graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1931. He was employed by the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown during World War II. He then farmed southeast of Washington for 32 years before moving to Washington, where he was employed by Crane Co. for 10 years until his retirement in 1983. An acreage in Brighton was his retirement home.

He enjoyed children and outdoor activities including hunting, fishing and playing horseshoes.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Lyle Hesseltine and wife Carol of rural Washington and Dale Hesseltine and wife Rhonda of Ainsworth; four daughters, Karen Zickefoose and husband Gail of Brighton, Connie Waterhouse and husband Robert Jr. of rural Washington, Linda Henderson and husband David of Washington and Sue Woodard and husband Jack of Richland; 18 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; five brothers; one grandson; and four great-grandchildren.
