Ruth E. BARTON

HILLS - Ruth E. BARTON, 97, died peacefully at Atrium Village in Hills, Iowa on Thursday, December 17, 2015 (note: in Johnson Co., IA).

A Memorial Service is planned for this spring at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea, Michigan. www.mitchellfuneral.com. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Waterloo, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Humane Society of Huron Valley, 3100 Cherry Hill Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 48105, www.hshv.org. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City handled local arrangements.

Born October 28, 1918, to Ray & Inez (ALBER) HASELSCHWERDT, Ruth grew up on her family's farm first along the Grass Lake road then on a farm on M52 near Manchester, Michigan. She enjoyed working with the horses alongside the men in the fields.

Ruth graduated from Chelsea High School and later received a bachelor's degree from what is now Eastern Michigan University. She taught elementary school children her entire career - in schools located in Carthage, Illinois, Lansing, Michigan and Fairfield, Iowa. She began her career teaching in a one room country school near her home alternating a year of teaching with a year of attending college while she worked her way through school during the Second World War.

Ruth met her future husband, Richard BARTON while in high school. The couple were married in December of 1945 in Chelsea after his return from service in the Pacific.

Ruth retired in 1973 - after a 30 year career as an educator. She moved to Iowa in 2009 to be closer to family.

Ruth is survived by her son Bruce BARTON (Claudette Showalter) of Riverside, Iowa, and a sister in law, Priscilla HASELSCHWERDT of Chelsea, Michigan.

Her husband Richard BARTON, two brothers and one sister died earlier.
