Everett C. SMITHBURG, 99, of Fairfield, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Everett Clark SMITHBURG

Everett Clark SMITHBURG, 99, of Fairfield, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Word of Life Lutheran Church in Fairfield, with Chris Fiske officiating. Interment will be at New Sweden Lutheran Cemetery, west of Four Corners near Lockridge.

The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Word of Life Lutheran Church, First Lutheran Church, Fairfield Lions Club or Shriners Children Hospitals. Cards and memorials can be left at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield, the church or mailed to Dennis SMITHBURG, 2323 Cedar Ave., Batavia 52533. Mr. SMITHBURG was born Aug. 9, 1916, at Aneroid, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Ralph and Eva HANNA SMITHBURG. He married Jeanette QUICK Feb. 23, 1936, at New Sweden Lutheran Church.

When he was young, his family moved to the New Sweden community, north of Lockridge in 1924 to his grandfather Gustav's farm. Mr. SMITHBURG attended Four Corners school and graduated from Lockridge High School in 1934.

He grew up working as a mechanic. He owned and operated Standard gas stations in Fairfield. First at the corner of B Street and Burlington Avenue; then west on Burlington.

He and his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1965 where he worked as a certified Ford auto technician and sold real estate. They returned to Fairfield in 1974.

He purchased George's Battery & Electric service station at Grimes Avenue and Fourth Street in New Chicago, retiring in 1993.

Mr. SMITHBURG was a member of Fairfield Lions Club, Howard Johnson Coffee Club, and he was a 70-year member of Clinton Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 15.

He enjoyed gardening, canning, hunting, fishing and time with family and friends.

Mr. SMITHBURG was a member of Word of Life Lutheran Church. He was strong in his faith, active in Lutheran church events all of his life and witnessed to all he met.

Survivors include: two daughters, Joanne BEHREND of Fairfield and Barbara LaMASTER and husband David of Park Rapids, Minnesota; one son, Dennis SMITHBURG and wife Carolyn of Batavia; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his wife; his parents; one brother, Clarence; two sisters, Irene WEST and Minnie HOUTS; one grandson; and one great-grandson.
