Jerry O. SMITH, 73, of Washington, Iowa, died late Saturday night, Sept. 19, 2015, at Pearl Valley Rehabilitation & Nursing Center of Washington (note: in Washington Co., IA).
The body has been cremated. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sandy Hook Cemetery near Brighton, with the Rev. Ryan Meader officiating.
Gould Funeral Home of Brighton is assisting the family.
Mr. SMITH was born July 3, 1942, near Coppock, the son of Joseph Oliver and Ruth Ellen VOLGER SMITH. He married Alice Faye FARRIER in 1988. She died July 21, 2013.
He grew up in the Brighton and Coppola area where he attended school.
Mr. SMITH served in the U.S. Army. He worked in construction, in various factories, on farms and as an over-the-road truck driver.
Mr. SMITH loved to play baseball, fish, play canasta and was a Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan.
Survivors include: two daughters, Dawn SMITH of Lone Tree and Rita Jo SELLS and husband Scott of Maysville; stepchildren, Sharon WARTH of Lone Tree, Angie WALLIS of North Liberty, Earl WARTH of Mt. Pleasant and Tommy CRAWFORD of Washington; several grandchildren; two sisters, Connie SHELANGOSKI and Nancy KELLY, both of Brighton; four brothers, Dennie SMITH, Jack SMITH, Rick SMITH, all of Washington, and Tim SMITH of Brighton.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: his parents; two sisters, Shirley GORDON and Peggy AMBROSE; and one brother, Gary.
