Kathryn B. Sample, 82, of Rock Island, Ill., and formerly of Libertyville, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at Silver Cross Nursing Center in Rock Island.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Rock Island. Burial will be in the National Cemetery at Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island.

Calling hours will be from 2-5 p.m. Thursday at Hodgson Funeral Home in Rock Island.

Family will receive visitors from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the church before the funeral.

Memorials can be made to United Methodist Church in Rock Island.

Mrs. Sample was born Aug. 14,. 1922, in Libertyville, the daughter of Earl A. and Cora B. Stansberry Howard. She married Hilton G. Sample June 7, 1946, in Rock Island. He died Nov. 26, 1981.

She was a program analyst with the United States Army Weapons Command at Rock Island Arsenal, retiring after 28 years in 1982. She helped to develop the position of postmaster at the arsenal and served as secretary to the postmaster.

Mrs. Sample was an active member of United Methodist Church, serving as chairwoman of Christian Outreach and member of the board of trustees and finance and pastor relations committees.

She also was an active member of the Association for Retarded Citizens in Rock Island County, Ill.

Survivors include one son, Stephen R. Sample of Rock Island.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, and one sister.
