Junior HOOTMAN, 88, of Floris, died at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2015, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

Junior Jacob HOOTMAN

Junior Jacob HOOTMAN, 88, of Floris, died at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 17, 2015, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Military rites by American Legion John Hyson Reneker Post No. 494 of Douds will be at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glasgow Cemetery of rural Eldon (note: in Wapello Co., IA).

Visitation with family will be 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.

Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family can be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 12700 Vetch Ave., Floris 52560.

Mr. HOOTMAN was born April 16, 1927, in Van Buren County, the son of Jacob Daniel and Bessie Francis CANADY HOOTMAN. He married Lucille Illene HEWITT Dec. 22, 1943, in Leando.

He grew up in Van Buren and Davis counties, attended country school at White No. 5 in Van Buren County and Center No. 5 in Davis County.

He and hs wife lived in Ottumwa until he joined the Army. The day he enlisted, he was selected by a naval commander to serve in the Navy during World War II. He served for 11 months and traveled all the way around the world. He was honorably discharged in June 1946.

The HOOTMANs lived in Ottumwa until moving to their 120-care farm in northeast Davis County, where he lived the rest of his life. He farmed and raised cattle. His farm expanded to more than 600 acres.

Mr. HOOTMAN worked 30 years for John Morrell packing plant in Ottumwa from Jan. 3, 1944, until its closing.

He was proud of his accomplishments for only having an eighth-grade education.

Survivors include: his wife; six children, Mike HOOTMAN and wife Coleen of Bloomfield, Twyla HOOTMAN of Floris, Craig HOOTMAN and wife Nancy of Ottumwa, Sandra KELLER and husband Mike of Fairfield, Lance HOOTMAN of Floris, Melanie HOOTMAN of Floris; one son-in-law, Tom ENGEL of Radcliffe; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three grandstepchildren; and six great-stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Linda ENGEL; one grandson; one great-grandson; two sisters, Mary LAUGHLIN and Zelda BREWERS; and two brothers, James and Hollis HOOTMAN.
