David was born March 2, 1953 in Sigourney, Iowa to Gerrit and Phyllis (PARCELL) HEEMSBERGEN. He grew up in Keokuk County until his parents purchased the farm near Selma in the mid 1960s. It was the farm that he called home from that day on.

He was one of six siblings and attended Cardinal High School, graduating with the class of 1971. He then went on to Indian Hills in Ottumwa and became an Auto Body Technician. In 1978, David married Jeannie BARTELL. Together they started a family, which gave David the gift of being a father. David and Jeannie later divorced, but his role as loving dad never wavered.

David opened "Countryside Auto Body" which he operated for several years before returning to farming full time. He continued to work on vehicles of his own and for family throughout his life. David was especially proud of his 1954 Chevy Pickup, and the International B tractor that had been the first tractor he had learned to drive on.

David also worked part-time for Jerry Potts while taking care of the row crops and livestock at home. He continued to work on the farm until his health no longer allowed him to do so. When he wasn't working on the farm or vehicles, he could be found visiting with friends.

David participated in Ragbrai for several years and enjoyed cheering for Rusty Wallace during the NASCAR race.

David was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gary HEEMSBERGEN; and a niece, Heather HEEMSBERGEN.

Survivors include his children, Heath HEEMSBERGEN of Ottumwa, Iowa and Niki (Kassidy) KIRKPATRICK of Selma, Iowa; four siblings, Dan (Leslie) HEEMSBERGEN of Ottumwa, Cheryl (Dan) THRASHER of Chicago, Illinois, Curtis (Sherrie) HEEMSBERGEN of Selma, and Craig (Peggy) HEEMSBERGEN of Agency; six grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
