Virginia Kurtz, 86, of Washington, Iowa, and formerly of Brighton, died at 4:33 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at McCreedy Home in Washington.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mother Cabrini Catholic Church in Richland, with the Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in East Pleasant Plain.

Open visitation will begin at 8 p.m. Friday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton, with family present from 7-8:30 p.m. Prayers for a Christian Wake will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established to St. Joseph Cemetery Association.

Mrs. Kurtz was born June 24, 1918, in Shelby, the daughter of Louis and Minnie Janka Schultz. She married George Kurtz Jan. 26, 1938, in East Pleasant Plain. He died Aug. 12, 1981.

She attended area country schools. She and her husband farmed for many years in the Brighton area. They retired to Brighton, where she was a housewife. She resided at McCreedy Home in Washington for the past three years

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include one daughter, Justine Schwartzrock and husband Jim of Tampa, Fla.; one son, Garold Kurtz and wife Janet of Tampa; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, George Schultz of Fairfield and Raymond Schultz of Crawfordsville.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Harold Kurtz; one sister, Rita Sojka; and one brother, Jess Schultz.
