John Joseph ARNDT, a World War II veteran and automobile enthusiast who grew up and raised his family in Fairfield, died March 24, 2015, in Copperas Cove, Texas, after a lengthy illness. He was 89.
John was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Brighton, Iowa, to Anthony and Mary ARNDT. He grew up in the Fairfield area and then served in the Army in Naples, Italy, during the war. After his service, he returned to Fairfield, where he met and married Alice (Katy) Kathleen JOHNSTON on July 30, 1947. The couple had four children, and they farmed for a while near Fairfield before moving into town, where John worked for years as a salesman at the local Ford dealership.
John and Katy moved to Austin, Texas, in 1984 after John retired. Although he no longer worked as a salesman, John never let go of his love for cars -- he frequently visited car auctions over the years, and often bought and sold vehicles for himself and his family members.
John and Katy enjoyed visiting with their children and grandchildren, and were longtime members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin.
John is survived by his wife; two brothers, Jim ARNDT of Texarkana, Texas, and Francis ARNDT of Fairfield; two sisters, Mary Ann LOFTUS of Dallas, Texas, and Theresa HELLMAN of Fort Madison, Iowa; and four children: Donna WHITTENBERGER (and husband, Don) of Copperas Cove, Texas; Patricia MILLICHAP (and husband, Martin) of Delafield, Wis.; Michael ARNDT (and wife, Melanie) of Roanoke, Texas; and Robert ARNDT of Colorado Springs, Colo. He also leaves six grandchildren -- Sarah EVANS, Whitney and Jeremy MILLICHAP, Ashleigh and Christopher ARNDT, and Brandon ARNDT -- as well as two great-grandchildren, Archer and Anders RUE.
A small service was held in John's honor on March 26 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Copperas Cove. His ashes will be interred at St. Thomas More in Austin.
