Dean Richard CANADAY

Dean Richard CANADAY, age 88 of Birmingham, Iowa died February 19, 2015 at the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

Dean was born September 19, 1926 in Lick Creek Township, Van Buren County, Iowa to Elmer and Edna JACKSON CANADAY.

Dean graduated from Birmingham High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy at the close of World War II.

Dean married Ruth Pauline JOHNSON on March 12, 1950 at the Methodist Church in Fairfield. She preceded him in death on July 4, 2001.

Dean was a plant manager in the plastic extrusion industry. During his career, Dean and his family lived in Fairfield, Iowa, Princeville, Illinois, Gardner, Kansas and Holt, Missouri, then moved back to Birmingham in the late 1980's (sic) upon his retirement.

Dean was mayor of Birmingham from 1990 to 1993. He was active until December, 2014. He was a member of the Birmingham American Legion, Birmingham Lions Club and the Masonic Clinton Lodge A.F. & A.M. #15 of Fairfield.

Dean's long life was filled with love of his family and his many hobbies. He enjoyed Bluegrass jams and the internet. In Dean's final years he found great joy in the accomplishments of his granddaughters Robin and Marissa.

Deceased family members include his wife, parents, 1 sister Cleola YARNELL and four brothers: Earl, Clifford, Lloyd and Robert CANADAY.

Surviving are his 2 sons: Steve CANADAY of Kansas City, Missouri, Ron CANADAY of Kansas City, Kansas, one daughter Mary CANADAY-GRAY (Joe) of Wyoming, Illinois, two adored graddaughters Robin GRAY and Marissa GRAY. Also surviving is his beloved friend Ruth Dodds of Fairfield, one sister Karen STREED (Larry) of Mt. Sterling, Iowa and one brother John CANADAY (Lois) of Boulder, Colorado.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday at the Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham with Pastor Herb Shafer officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday beginning at 10:00 A.M. until funeral service time at 11:00 A.M.

Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham (note: in Van Buren Co., IA) with Military Rites by the Birmingham American Legion Post.

Dean was an organ donor to the Iowa Donor Program.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Birmingham United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are in the care of the Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham.
