Sammy Eugene OWENS

Sammy Eugene OWENS, 81, of Fairfield, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, at his home surrounded by family.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Dec. 30 at First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield.

A full obituary will be in the paper at a later date.

Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield is helping the family with arrangements.

Sammy 'Sam' Eugene OWENS

Sammy "Sam" Eugene OWENS, 81, of Fairfield, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, at home surrounded by his family.

Per Mr. OWENS's wishes, the body was cremated.

A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Dec. 30, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Joseph Phipps officiating. Military rites will follow the service. Burial of cremains will be at a later date.

Mr. OWENS was born Sept. 25, 1933, in Exline, the son of Samuel Ray and Daisy CLINE OWENS. He married Myrna Beatrice BYARS July 23, 1955, in Centerville.

Mr. OWENS served in the U.S. Army. He worked for the city of Fairfield as street department superintendent and retired in January 2000 after 24 years of service.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was on an older men's church volleyball team that won first place many times.

Mr. OWENS enjoyed family hunting and fishing trips, yard work, camping, square dancing and going to McDonald's Coffee Club. When his boys were younger, he was a scout master for troop No. 60 Cub Scouts and recently he was a leader for No. 67 Boy Scouts.

His main purpose in life was his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and his wife loved to go to his kids' and grandkids' activities. He was always lending a hand to friends and families.

Survivors include: his wife, Myrna OWENS of Fairfield; three sons, Samuel Lee OWENS and wife Candi of Branson, Missouri, Robert Duane OWENS and wife JoEllyn of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Bryan Sean OWENS and wife Debra of Las Vegas, Nevada; one daughter, Kendra Kathleen OWENS STRUCK and husband Brian of Fairfield; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Goldie DWIGHT and Patricia RUGGLES, both of Centerville; and one brother, Larry OWENS of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; four brothers, Robert, William "Bill," Ira "Frank" and Jerry OWENS.
