Ruth SALTS, 98, formerly of Batavia and Fairfield, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Alice 'Ruth' SALTS

Alice "Ruth" (KOONTZ) SALTS, age 98, passed peacefully from this life on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at The Living Community of St. Joseph, St. Joseph, MO.

Ruth was born on August 5, 1915 in Jefferson County, Iowa, the daughter of Ross and Pearl (GLASGOW) KOONTZ.

She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1933 with a normal training teaching certificate.

Ruth married Charles Roy SALTS on June 23, 1940 in Fairfield. Ruth and Roy farmed for many years near Batavia. She began her teaching career in 1935 and taught in several rural Jefferson County schools. Ruth attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls and Parsons College in Fairfield, where she earned a degree in elementary education in 1962. She earned her masters' degree from Northeast Missouri (Truman State) University, Kirksville, Missouri in 1970.

She retired in 1980 from the Cardinal School District, Eldon, Iowa, after a combined 37 years of teaching.

Ruth was active in 4-H Club and school and church activities as a young girl. She always loved to study; and loved to go to school. She was a long time member of the Batavia Literary Guild book club and the Jefferson County Retired School Personnel Association. She was manager of the congregate meal site in Batavia for the Jefferson County Senior Services for several years, and a member of Keep Young Club. She was a member of the Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary.

She was an active member of the Batavia United Methodist Church and Batavia United Methodist Women. She was a 50 year member of the Arbor Vitae Chapter O.E.S. She was an avid bridge player, and she and Roy enjoyed numerous card clubs over the years. They also enjoyed traveling, and visited many states in the U.S. including Hawaii, and also traveled to Europe, the Caribbean and South America.

Ruth lived in the Batavia and Fairfield communities all her life until she moved to St. Joseph in July, 2011 to be near her daughter and family.

Ruth was the second of seven children. Deceased are her husband Roy on January 11, 1983, her parents, 4 sisters: Gladys May KOONTZ, Helen HIATT, Erma HARTMAN and Marjorie MANLEY, and one brother Howard KOONTZ, all of Fairfield.

They were they parents of one daughter Rita.

Surviving are her daughter Rita and son-in-law Steve WHIPPLE of Cosby, Missouri., (sic) two grandsons: Lance (Charlette) WHIPPLE of Cosby and Matthew (Mariam) WHIPPLE of St. Joseph; four great grandchildren, Lance Tyler, Zackery, Natalie and Samuel WHIPPLE; one brother John (Ruth) KOONTZ of Fairfield; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 8th at the Batavia United Methodist Church in Batavia with Pastor Michael Finn officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Cremation will follow the funeral service and inurnment of cremains will be at the Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the Batavia United Methodist Church, Batavia, Iowa; The Living Community of St. Joseph Foundation, St. Joseph, Missouri or to Hands of Hope Hospice, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Arrangements are in the care of the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
