Ex-Fairfielder CHAMP dies

Former Fairfielder Esther D. Champ died Friday at Convalescent Hospital in National City, Calif. She was 84.

CHAMP was born April 10, 1903, in Van Buren County, the daughter of Wyatt and Minnie LEWIS THOMPSON. She had lived most of her life in Van Buren and Jefferson counties, moving to life with her son and daughter-in-law in California in 1981.

She had worked at Mel's Cafe as a cook and at the Dexter Company. CHAMP was a member of the Free Methodist Church.

She married Carl NELSON Dec. 31, 1925, and he died in April 1959. She married Vernis "Friday" CHAMP Oct. 28, 1941, and he died Nov. 23, 1969.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry NELSON of Bonita, Calif., and Donald NELSON of Orlando, Fla. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Carl Robert, one brother and two sisters.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Free Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Kaufmann and the Rev. George Koch officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Free Methodist Church. The casket will arrive Monday afternoon.
