Lawrence Edward ZUEHLKE, 83, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at United Presbyterian Home in Washington.
A celebration of life service is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Victory Fellowship Church in Brighton, with the Rev. Larry Black officiating. Interment will be at Brethren Cemetery in Libertyville.
Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials have been established for Victory Fellowship Church or Hospice of Washington county. Online condolences can be sent through the website www.jonesfh.com.
Mr. ZUEHLKE was born March 21, 1931, near Batavia, the son of Edward and Zelma WIRE ZUEHLKE. He married Wanda Frances OLIVER June 12, 1955, at First Lutheran Church in Fairfield. She died in February (note: February 8, 2014).
He graduated from Batavia High School in 1949. He earned a degree in elementary education, with a minor in music, from Parsons College in Fairfield. He later attended University of Iowa to pursue a degree in library science.
After his marriage, he and his wife moved to Muldraugh, Kentucky. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War (sic - Korean Conflict) where he was a chaplain's assistant at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
After his discharge from the Army in 1956, he taught at Wyman in Iowa for one year then moved to Washington, Iowa, in June 1957. He was a school teacher for the Iowa City Community School District. He taught for many years at Horace Mann Elementary. He retired in 1986.
After their move to Washington, the couple were members of the United Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years. They assisted in forming Victory Fellowship Church in Brighton after encouragement from their son Andrew. Mr. ZUEHLKE continued to remain an active member of Victory Fellowship Church. He was a church organist for many years and also served as church treasurer. He assisted his wife in running a "ministry of helping others" throughout his life.
Mr. ZUEHLKE was an avid genealogist. He was a member of the Washington County and Iowa state genealogical societies. He enjoyed reading, gardening and playing the organ and piano.
Survivors include: one daughter, Gloria June REED and husband Robert of Washington; two sons, Francis Edward ZUEHLKE and wife Stephanie of Des Moines and Andrew David ZUEHLKE and wife Holli of Washington; three grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and his infant twin brother, Leonard.
