Robert RAINS Jr.

Robert J. RAINS Jr., 88, of rural Birmingham died at 1:11 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

The funeral is set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Phil Campbell officiating. Burial, with military honors by Hanson-Brannan Post (sic - Haney-Brannan) and Iowa National Guard Honors Team, will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery east of Douds (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with family present from 5-7 p.m.

Memorials to Birmingham Fire Department, Birmingham Homecoming or Zion Lutheran Cemetery can be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at PO Box 5, Birmingham 52535.

Mr. RAINS was born Oct. 17, 1925, near Lockridge, the son of Robert J. and Helen FORNEY RAINS. He married Beulah M. PARROTT Sept. 16, 1944, in Butler, North Carolina, prior to leaving for Europe with the 282nd Engineers Battalion, U.S. Army. She died May 3, 2014.

During his Army service, Mr. RAINS was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and took part in building roads and bridges, including the Rhine River bridge over which American troops under Gen. George Patton's command travelled into the heart of Germany.

Mr. RAINS graduated from Fairfield High School and was a life-long farmer, living on the same farm east of Birmingham since 1950. He had been employed at Noller Bros. Implement Co. and Rockwell International in Fairfield, Sinclair Petrochemicals in Batavia and he was a self-employed mechanic.

He was a member of Haney-Brannan Post No. 181, American Legion in Birmingham. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, working on antique tractors and playing with his grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Allan L. RAINS and wife Maria of Bonaparte and Roy D. RAINS and wife Sherry of Birmingham; one daughter, Carolyn K. TAYLOR and husband Delbert of Bloomfield; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Karen FORDYCE of Davenport.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: his parents; one son, Darrell Robert RAINS; two brothers, Clarence and Leonard RAINS; and one sister, Dorothy BARROW.
