Chester Eugene McBride
May 17, 2004Chester Eugene McBride, 88, of Batavia died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Mill Pond Care Center in Ankeny.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kremer Funeral Chapel in Batavia. Burial will be in the Batavia Cemetery in Batavia, with military rites conducted by the O.B. Nelson American Legion Post 3 and the Walter B. Shafer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 775 of Ottumwa.
Open visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Family will be present from 7-8 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established.
The son of Frank and Cora Ann Gonterman McBride, McBride was born Jan. 27, 1916, near Libertyville. He married M. LaRue Shepherd Sept. 1, 1946, in Fairfield. She died July 1, 1981.
Mr. McBride was reared and educated in Jefferson County. He attended Des Moines country school and graduated from Libertyville High School.
He was in the wood-sawing business prior to World War II. He served as a machinist in the U.S. Army Air Corps, mostly in England. After his discharge from the military, he farmed near Libertyville and Batavia for the remainder of his life.
McBride was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2271 of Fairfield and the W.C. Harness American Legion Post 667 of Batavia.
His pastimes were fishing, hunting, telling stories of his childhood and spending time with his family.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Lewis and husband Bill of Des Moines and Linda McBride of Slater; and five grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Eugene McBride; and one sister, Marjorie Catherine McBride.
