Lucille Laura "Julie" PARSONS COWEN, 91, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at Briarcliff Health Care Center in Tennessee.
The body was cremated. A memorial service was held July 20 at First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge with the Rev. Lee Morris and the Rev. Larry Dipboye officiating.
The family requests memorials be in the form of donations to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, 205 Badger Road, Oak Ridge; the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter, 395 Belgrade Road, Oak Ridge, Tenn. 37830; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Mrs. COWEN was born Feb. 26, 1909, in Fairfield, the daughter of William George and Pearl Blanche PARSONS. She married Don COWEN. He died in June 1967.
She and her husband were natives of southeastern Iowa. Mrs. COWEN lived in Fairfield until April of 1944, when the COWENs moved to Oak Ridge with the Manhattan Project. She accompanied her husband to Puerto Rico and Europe during the Atoms for Peace conferences in the 1950s.
She moved to the Oak Ridge Retirement Community in 1990.
Mrs. COWEN was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge and had formerly been an active member of Robertsville Baptist Church. She was one of the early members of Oak Ridge Women's Club, Oak Ridge Jaycettes and Lioness Club. She was a volunteer at Oak Ridge Cancer Cupboard until a few years ago and was a volunteer at Daniel Arthur Rehabilitation Center in the 1960s.
Survivors include one son, John P. "Jack" COWEN and his wife Sharon of Oak Ridge; and two grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers, Milford, Monte, Wesley and Glenn PARSONS.
