Walter Leroy SWAILES

Walter Leroy SWAILES, 91, of Holmen, Wisconsin, and formerly of Keosauqua died Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Bluffview Memory Care in Holmen.

A memorial service is planned at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Douglas Harding officiating. Burial of cremains, with military honors by the American Legion Beer-Barker Post 113 of Keosauqua, will be in Purdom Cemetery (note: in Van Buren Co., IA).

Memorials to Keosauqua Public Library or a charity of the donor's choice can be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 1416 Hickory St., Onalaska, WI 54650.

Mr. SWAILES was born July 3, 1923, in Rome, Iowa, the son of George and Bonnie SAMMONS SWAILES. He married Winifred Winona WALLACE in 1948. She died Feb. 15, 2002.

He grew up in Keosauqua and graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1941. He joined the U.S. Navy following graduation and served in the Pacific Theatre on the USS Ebony. He attended Midshipman School and achieved the rank of lieutenant junior grade.

Following graduation from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree, he joined International Harvester Co. in 1948, where he worked at facilities in East Moline, Illinois, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Chicago, Illinois. He retired as manager of service parts operations in 1983.

Survivors include: one son, Larry SMITH and wife Kathy of Surprise, Arizona; two daughters, Susan BOUDREAU and husband Pierre of Surprise, Arizona, and Amy SWAILES of Onalaska, Wisconsin; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Martha HERITAGE of Davenport.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold SWAILES; and three sisters, Esther HOTCHKISS, Agnes HULEN and Evelyn BRANNAN.
