Pilot killed in plane crash
By Diane Vance
Ledger staff writer

The Fairfield Fire Department was called at 11:21 a.m. Sunday to Fairfield Municipal Airport because of a plane crash.

The experimental aircraft was owned by Robert Lyle BOLLINGER, age 64, of Fairfield. BOLLINGER was believed to be the pilot of the plane at the time of the crash, according to today's news release from Jefferson County Attorney Tim Dille.

An investigation shows the plane had caught fire at some point and the pilot was dead. The exact cause of death is pending results of an autopsy being performed by the Office of the Iowa State Medical Examiner.

The Fairfield Police Department, fire department, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol all responded Sunday morning and began a search. Wreckage of the small plane was found in a cornfield southeast of the airport.

Nine firefighters used water to extinguish the flame, according to the fire department's report. Firefighters returned to the station at 1:12 p.m. Sunday.

The airport reopened at 2:30 p.m. Sunday according to Robert Lyons, airport manager.

The Jefferson County Law Enforcement Center had been notified around 11:30 a.m. Sunday about a report of a small experimental aircraft that had crashed in a cornfield shortly after takeoff.

The Federal Aviation Administration responded to investigate the crash today. Its report will be released at a later time upon completion of the investigation.

Staff at the Fairfield Municipal Airport assisted local law enforcement and the fire department at the crash scene.
