Harold F. "Cye" Shipler, 75, of Batavia, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grace Family Church near Ollie, with the Rev. Dar Eckley officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery in Batavaia.

Open visitation will begin at noon Thursday at Kremer Funeral Chapel in Batavia, with family present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice Inc. or the Batavia Alumni Association.

Mr. Shipler was born Jan. 18, 1929, in Jefferson County, the son of Melvin and Vera Morley Shipler. He married Juanita Whitmore May 18, 1948, in Gladstone, Ill.

He graduated from Batavia High School in 1947 and later from DeForest Electronics School in Chicago, Ill.

Shipler was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years. In addition, he was a real estate agent, the editor of the Eldon Forum and the Batavia Beacon publications and one of the organizers and past secretary of the 911 emergency system in Jefferson County. He had been mayor of Batavia for more than 20 years.

He was a member of the Batavia Lions Club.

His favorite pastimes were playing cards and collecting antiques.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Daniel Shipler of DeWitt and Michael Shipler of Batavia; two daughters, Mary Ann Nordyke and husband Delbert of Abingdon and Colleen Heisel and husband Kerry of Stockport; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David Shipler; and two brothers, John and David Shipler.
