Body of woman found in house

Fairfield police were called at 9 p.m. Friday at 704 S. Third St. where they discovered a decomposed body.

According to police, Melody KATZ, 40, was the resident of the home. KATZ's mother, who lives out of state, had been unable to reach her daughter by telephone for several weeks and had called a neighbor to check on her, police said.

Fairfield police were called to the home and found a body lying on the floor.

Jefferson County Medical Examiner Dr. Terry Sutton said today that the body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Des Moines to determine positive identification and cause of death.

Woman's body identified

The decomposed body found Feb. 5 in an alley residence in the 700 block of South Third Street has been identified by State Medical Examiner Thomas Bennett as that of Melody KATZ, 40, of Fairfield.

Bennett said today that KATZ was identified last week through dental records and that her body had been released to her mother in Pittsburgh. Bennett said that the cause of death in the KATZ investigation was pending further tests at the state criminalistics laboratory in Des Moines. He said those results could take a couple of months to complete.

Fairfield police had said that KATZ's mother had been unable to reach her daughter by telephone for several weeks before the body was discovered.

Bennett said he doesn't suspect foul play in the case.

Friends of Melody KATZ say they have planned a memorial service for 8 p.m. tonight in the banquet room at the Best Western Fairfield Inn. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Thomas Miller of the Liberal Catholic Church.
