John W. SIPE, 93, 204 w. Hempstead Ave., died Sunday morning at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City.
He was born Nov. 13, 1894, in Harrisonville, Penn., the son of Martin and Mahala MELLOTT SIPE. He married Ethel JOHNSON Dec. 24, 1917, in Ottumwa. She died June 8, 1981.
He was a member of the Packwood Christian Church and the American Legion.
He had spent his life in Jefferson County as a farmer. He also owned and operated a service station in Fairfield.
He was an Army veteran of World War I, with a battle record at St. Milheil and Argonne.
He is survived by four daughters and one son: Elsie McDONALD, Eagle Point, Ore.; Arlene BUSSERT, Concord, Calif.; Norman THORNBURG, Danville; Lois JAMESON, Burlington; and J. Dale SIPE, Ottumwa.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter, Doris, and three sisters and six brothers.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Clair Odell officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Packwood Cemetery.
Family visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.
