Thursday, 27 Jan 2000Bert SNOOK, 98, of 905 S. 14th Ave. W., died of heart failure, Tuesday, Jan. 25, at his home.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain at Skiff Medical Center in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home where family will be present from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials to Skiff Medical Center Home Care or Hospice of Jasper County will be accepted.
The son of John and Edna ZAHN SNOOK, he was born April 3, 1901, in Jasper County. He attended Jasper County country school. He married Henrietta JESS Jan. 14, 1921, in Newton.
A lifelong resident of Newton, Mr. SNOOK was employed for 19 years by One Minute Washer Company before starting Snook Inn in Newton, which he owned and operated from 1939 until his retirement in 1967. The restaurant remained in the family until 1998. Mr. SNOOK was a lifetime member of the BPOE Elks and the Fireman’s Association.
Survivor include two sons and daughters-in-law, Burton E. and Darlyne of Newton and Robert J. and Mildred of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Les GEARHART of Newton and Dorothy and Del VAN HORN of Jefferson; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter and a sister.
