Edith P. Garrels, 94, formerly of Packwood died Monday, March 29, 2004, at Parkview Home in Wayland.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Packwood Christian Church, with the Rev. Jane Jordan officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church, where family will be present to greet friends until the service.

No visitation is planned at the funeral home, Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont.

Memorials may be made to Parkview Home or to Packwood Christian Church.

Mrs. Garrels was born July 24, 1909, near Pekin, the daughter of John Elbert and Bessie Belle Hayes Zepp. She married Cecil C. Garrels May 30, 1932, in Pekin. He died July 16, 1979.

Mrs. Garrels graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1926, then attended Iowa State Teachers College and William Penn College. She later attended classes are Parsons College, Iowa Wesleyan College and University of Iowa.

She taught in rural schools in Martinsburg, Fremont, Ollie and Packwood for 26 years.

Mrs. Garrels was a member of Packwood Christian Church and the churchs senior citizens group. She was a former member of Pekin and Packwood Methodist churches.

She also was a member of TTT Chapter F, Jolly Jane Club, Sew and So Club, Zephyr Club, Neighborhood Coffee Club.

Survivors include one son, Dale E. Garrels and wife Beverly of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Ella May Ruppert and husband Robert of Washington, Iowa; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Margery Dillon of Hedrick; and one brother, Ralph Zepp of Jackson, Ala.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Dwight, Rex and Merle Zepp; and one sister, Carrie May Utterback.
