Rita Elaine THESS, 68, formerly of Pleasant Plain died Tuesday, March 23, 1004, at Monroe County Hospital in Albia.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton, with the Rev. Doris Mellick officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Plain Friends Cemetery.

No visitation is planned.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of Monroe County. Donations may be left at the funeral home or sent to the family at 304 110th St., Brighton 52540.

Mrs. THESS was born April 24, 1935, in Kalona, the daughter of George F. and Vertie KENNARD SERIVEN (sic - SCRIVEN). She married Earl HOBACK Jan. 15, 1955. After his death, she married LeRoy THESS in 1971. He died in 1989.

She grew up in the Kalona area and graduated from Kalona High School in 1953. She held many jobs, including one at the University of Iowa Printing Department in Iowa City for several years. She had been a member of the Kalona First Responders for a short time.

After her retirement in 1997, Mrs. THESS moved to Pleasant Plain and provided care for the elderly in their home in the Fairfield area.

When her health failed, she moved to Albia in 2003 to be with her daughter.

She was a member of the United Christian and Baptist Church in Kalona.

Survivors include one daughter, Julia RHODES and husband Jon of Albia; three sons, Kevin HOBACK and wife Joy of Chino Valley, Ariz., Kim HOBACK of Phoenix, Ariz., and Randall HOBACK and wife Stacia of Iowa City; one daughter-in-law, Geri HOBACK of Washington, Iowa; one step-daughter, Dawn JOHNSON and husband Rod of Kuna, Idaho; two sisters, Charlene BARTEL of Dallas, Ore., and Janet REDLINGER of Pleasant Plain; three brothers, Gene SERIVEN (sic - SCRIVEN) of Bulverde, Texas, Blaine SERIVEN (sic - SCRIVEN) of Coralville and Joe SERIVEN (sic - SCRIVEN) of Muscatine; 15 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, Earl HOBACK II.
