Nellie Ritz Pencil, 94, of Selma, died at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Nelson Nursing Home in Fairfield.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Selma United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Connie Markle officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery in rural Floris.

Visitation opens at 3 p.m. Friday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with family present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials to Selma United Methodist Church or Nelson Nursing Home may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 11415 J St., Selma 52588.

Mrs. Pencil was born Jan. 6, 1910, near Floris, the daughter of Silas B. and Anna Kathryn Lasley Jones. She married Harry Ritz June 15, 1931. He died in January 1955. She married Oscar Pencil Jan. 14, 1968. He died in July 1983.

She resided in Selma from 1932. She taught school for five years in Davis County, was employed as a nurse's aide at Ottumwa Reginal Health Center for 10 years, and did home nursing.

A member of Bethlehem Christian Church from 1926, Mrs. Pencil joined Selma United Methodist Church in 1982. She played the violin at church and social gatherings and participated in the Selma Jam music festivals.

Survivors include two children, Ralph Ritz and wife Evelyn of Selma and Janet Bickford and husband Verl of Selma; three stepchildren, Keith Pencil and wife Mary of Libertyville, Larry Pencil and wife Caroline of Birmingham and Lucille Godwin and husband Rex of Fairfield; eight stepgrandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren ; and one step-great-great-granddaughter.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Nathan and Charles Jones and a 5-year-old; and one sister Bessie Fisk.
