Florence J. Bockemuehl, age 96, of 809 W. Taylor Ave., Fairfield, died at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at the Nelson Nursing home.

Born Feb. 20, 1908, in Batavia, she was the daughter of Carl O. and Sarah Jane McDowell Black.

She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1926. She completed business college at Chillacothe, Mo., as a Western Union telegraph manager. She worked for Western Union at Superior, Neb., as well as Keokuk, Dubuque, Manchester and, for many years, Pella.

Florence married George D. Bockemuehl Nov. 1, 1936, in Ottumwa. He died Feb. 6, 1997.

They lived in Cedar Rapids, where she worked for Dr. Ladd, Stamats Printing and retired after many years at Armstrong Department Store.

She has been a resident of Nelson Nursing Home since 1997.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fairfield.

Florence enjoyed working with flowers and making scrapbooks.

Deceased family members include her husband; parents; and one brother, Kermit Black.

Surviving are two sisters, Louise Dailey of Fairfield and Edith Davis of Vici, Okla.; plus five nieces and nephews, Marilyn Taylor, Jane Ann McCormick, Dixie Jameson, Darrell Black and James Davis.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. David Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Batavia Cemetery in Batavia.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. at Raymond's.

A memorial has been established to the Nelson Nursing Home Activity Fund.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
