Neil Pampel, 96, former resident of Ollie and Iowa City, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at the Las Palmas Health Center in McAllen, Texas.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Marvin Robeck officiating. Ashes will be interred at Mount Zion Cemetery in Martinsburg.

Friends and family are invited to a luncheon after the memorial service at First Lutheran Church. Memorials to the family or to the Mount Zion Chapel where Mr. Pampel's great-grandfather, Benjamin Hollingsworth, was pastor and built the chapel as a missionary project, may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 1759 200th Street, Fairfield 52556.

Mr. Pampel was born July 30, 1907, in Keokuk County, the son of Charles and Alta Hollingsworth Pampel. He married Murriel March Keller Oct. 11, 1933, at Rock Island, Ill. She died Oct. 4, 1989.

Mr. Pampel grew up on a farm near Ollie. He later owned and operated an independent trucking line before purchasing land in Hamilton County, where he farmed until retirement. The Pampels enjoyed wintering at Guadalajara, Mexico, before moving to Gretna, La. After Mrs. Pampel's death, he moved to Iowa City and made his home with his daughter. After 1997 he resided in Tip of Texas Park in Pharr, Texas.

Survivors include three daughters, Thelma Berg and husband Gene of Baton Rouge, La., Karen Krumboltz and husband Thomas of Fairfield, and Lucille Gaudet of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby Hansen of Chariton and Evelyn Cunningham of Kansas City, Mo.; and one brother, Charles Pampel of Columbus, Ga.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother.
