Max Bernard BENDA, 92, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of East Pleasant Plain and Brighton died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1996, at Washington County Hospital in Washington, after a two-year illness.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain, with the Rev. M. Eugene BENDA officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery at East Pleasant Plain. Visitation is open at Jones Funeral Home in Washington, with the family present from 4 to 5 and 6 to 7 this evening. The Christian wake service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to St. Joseph Elevator Fund.
BENDA was born Jan. 21, 1904, in East Pleasant Plain, the son of Joseph and Emma KURTZ BENDA. He attended the Pleasant Plain Academy before entering high school in the newly built brick building, and graduated in 1923 with the first senior class to graduated from that building. On April 25, 1932, he married Lois McCLINTIC in East Pleasant Plain. He lived there and in Brighton before moving to Washington in 1988. He owned and operated a farm which was declared a Century Farm in 1976 by the Iowa Department of Agriculture. He retired from farming in 1969, when he moved to Brighton. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and for many years was secretary of the Pleasant Plain School Board.
Surviving are his wife of Washington; a daughter, Joyce GUY of Brighton; two sons, the Rev. M. Eugene BENDA of Tipton, James BENDA of Mount Pleasant; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Bertha MINICK of Washington; and two brothers, Albert of Washington and Joseph of Baton Rouge, La. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Francis, Leo and Clem; and a sister, Sister Mary Constance.
