Gary L. McKAY

Gary L. McKAY, 71, of Grinell, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

A funeral was Saturday in Grinnell. He was buried Saturday at Sixteen Cemetery near What Cheer (note: in Keokuk County, IA).

Memorials may be made to Grinnell Regional Medical Center or to United Presbyterian Church in Gibson and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell 50112, which handled arrangements.

Mr. McKAY was born Sept. 25, 1942, in Oskaloosa, the son of James Lester and Dorothy HIZEY McKAY. He married Patty BEASLEY Nov. 16, 1963, in Gibson.

He was raised in Gibson and graduated from Thornburg High School with the Class of 1961. He attended the University of Northern Iowa.

He began his insurance career in 1962 with Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company.

He and his family moved to Fairfield in 1966, where he worked for Jefferson County Mutual.

The family relocated to Clarinda in 1974, where he was name manager of Southwest Iowa Mutual Insurance Association. At that time he also started the McKay Insurance Agency.

He resigned from Southwest Iowa Mutual in 1980 to devote full time to his agency. He was extremely proud of the service his agency provided to many people and friends in Clarinda and southwest Iowa.

The family moved to Grinnell in 1997, where he purchased the McDowell Insurance Agency. He owned and operated the McKay-McDowell Insurance Agency until he retired in December 2007.

The most important thing in his life was his wife, children and grandchildren and he enjoyed following their interests and activities.

He spent much of his leisure time outdoors, hunting, fishing, golfing and yard work. Earlier in his life he enjoyed flying his Piper Cub airplane. He had a passion for horses. He treasured all the special times at Lost Nation with his friends who he considered family.

Survivors include his wife, Patty McKAY of Grinnell; one son, Shawn McKAY and spouse Cathy of Grinnell; one daughter, Shannon WAGONER and spouse Brian of Lincoln, Neb.; four grandchildren; and one sister Linda SNAKENBURG of Oskaloosa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
