"DEATH OF JOHN SWOPE. John Swope, a resident of Jefferson County since 1847 or 1848, died at his home in this city Wednesday. He was 83 years of age, and had been in feeble health for several years. Mr. Swope was a native of Pennsylvania. He was four times married, and his last wife, formerly Mrs. Adkins, survives him. He had two children by his first marriage and a large family by the second. No member of his family is now living in this vicinity. Mr. Swope lived for many years in Cedar and Round Prairie townships, where he was a landholder and successful farmer. Failing health caused him to remove to this city. He had many friends among his old neighbors. His remains were interred in Mt. Zion cemetery, near his old home, Friday. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. G. Barton, of Mt. Pleasant, an old friend, and by Rev. Leander Lane."
