“OBITUARY. Mrs. Jane Fiedler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Miller, was born in Indiana, Sept. 18, 1835, and departed this life Apr. 8, 1926 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Perry Monfort, Fairfield, Iowa. When about three years old she came with her parents to this state and settled near Glasgow…..In January 1853 she was united in marriage to John Fell. On March 18 of that same year she and her husband started across the plains to California, reaching their destination Sept. 5. They remained in California six or seven years. Two sons were born to them while in the west. The return journey was made by ship and across the Isthmus of Panama. This proved a most disastrous voyage, as the ship on which they sailed, the Central America, encountered a terrific storm and was wrecked off Cape Hatteras with great loss of life. The women and children were taken off in lifeboats, but the men went down with the ship, among them the husband of the deceased, and their younger son also died later as a result of the exposure…..She returned to her father’s home in this state and two or three years later married Daniel Fiedler who passed away in 1904. Three children were born to this union, Mrs. E.Y. Culbertson, Centralia, Mo., Mrs. Kate Bradshaw, Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. Perry Monfort, Fairfield, Iowa, who, with the son, David Fell, survive; also three sisters, Mrs. Stout, Mrs. Cochran, and Mrs. Kate Jones…..”
