Harold S. Derby, 82, of Brighton died at Washington Care Center in Washington, Iowa, Thursday, March 11, 2004.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton, with the Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Brighton.

Family visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established for the Brighton Volunteer First Responders and may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at PO Box 294, Brighton 52540.

Mr. Derby was born Aug. 11, 1921, near Rubio, the son of William "Bill" and Mary Downing Derby. He married Velma I. Norton June 1, 1940, in Kahoka, Mo.

He attended Valley country school.

Mr. Derby was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He had served in Saipan.

He and his wife moved to Brighton in 1944.

He worked at The Dexter Company for 36 years, retiring due to poor health.

He was a member of Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics & Allied Workers International Union AFL-CIO Local No. 359.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, William Derby and wife Margie of Brighton and Ronald Derby and wife Deb of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Jan Buck and husband Shennie of Ainsworth; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lloyd Derby.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Pansy Gillis and Pearl Moody; and four brothers, Bacil, Elmer, Henry and Ralph Derby.
