George WEMMIE

George WEMMIE, 91, of Batavia died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Kremer Funeral Chapel in Batavia, with the Rev. Gordan Hawkins officiating. Interment will be in Batavia Cemetery.

Open visitation began at noon today at the chapel, with family present from 7-8 p.m. today.

Memorials may be directed to Floris Baptist Church or the donors choice.

Mr. WEMMIE was born Jan. 23, 1913, in Burlington, the son of Fred and Mary HUNEKE WEMMIE. He married Mary E. KRANZE (sic - KRANTZ) April 5, 1938, in Muscatine.

He and his wife farmed in the Burlington area for seven years prior to moving to the Batavia area, where he farmed until his retirement in the mid-1970s. He also was a self-employed carpenter.

Mr. Wemmie attended the Floris Baptist Church in Floris.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Paul WEMMIE of Batavia and David WEMMIE of Granville, Ill.; one daughter, Martha Jean WEMMIE of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Albert Wemmie; and two sisters, Emma WOYL and Anna KOHRS.

Admin. note: Wife Mary died in 2011 in Keosauqua, and is buried in Batavia Cemetery with him.
