Howard L. Schafer, 79, of Milton died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at his home.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with Kramer Smith officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton.

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, with family present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials to Milton Senior Meals may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 23012 215th St., Bloomfield 52537.

Mr. Schafer was born Sept. 1, 1924, near Brighton, the son of Dale and Florence Crawford Schafer. He married Elizabeth M. Jacobs Nov. 23, 1947, near Fairfield. She died Jan. 24, 1997.

Mr. Schafer farmed near Olds and Fairfield and lived the past 32 years in Milton. He had worked for DeVoss Farms and was a truck driver for Mid-States Equipment Co. in Milton.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lee Messer of Bloomfield and Linda Kay Moore of Ottumwa; four sons, Elmer J. Schafer of Orlando, Fla., Leo D. Schafer of Fairfield, Arthur L. Schafer of Wayland and Howard L. Schafer Jr. of Ottumwa; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Schafer of Milton; and one sister, Jean Simmons of Sandwich, Ill.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Esteline Rundquist; one brother, Dean Schafer; one infant son; one infant daughter; and one grandson.
