Francis GARRELS, 65, of rural Birmingham, died at 7:40 a.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.
Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds.

Francis A. GARRELS, 65, of rural Birmingham, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.
A graveside service is at 11 a.m. Monday at Iowaville Cemetery, west of Selma, with the Rev. David Albert officiating (note: in Van Buren County, IA).
Visitation is 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds.
Gifts for a memorial to be designated later by the family may be left at the funeral home, cemetery or mailed to the family at 20422 Hwy 16, Birmingham 52535.
Mr. GARRELS was born Aug. 27, 1948, in Linby, the son of Howard and Blanche ECHELBERRY GARRELS. He married Diane WEIR; they divorced. He married Marilyn MURPHY, Nov. 28, 1969, in Silvis, Ill.
He grew up in Eldon and later moved to the farm in rural Birmingham.
He worked at Rock Island Railroad for nine years in Drakesville as a section gang foreman and at Ralston Purina in Ottumwa.
He attended school to become a registered nurse and worked for the correctional facility in Mount Pleasant.
He was a member of Keosauqua Masonic Lodge No. 10 A.F. & A.M., and the Eldon Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; two sons, Timothy GARRELS and spouse Diana of Eldon and Jim GARRELS and spouse Julie of Troy; two daughters, Kimberly CHICKERING and spouse Tony of Eldon and Christine PADAVICH and spouse Larry of Ottumwa; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three brothers, Junior GARRELS, Tom MYERS and Wayne HIGDON, all of Eldon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Barbara MOORE.
